The Sunflower Project is the heart of Sunflower Roots Inc., dedicated to bringing light, care, and creative opportunity to vulnerable children — including foster youth in Marin County and orphans and displaced children in Ukraine. Inspired by the sunflower’s strength and its instinct to always turn toward the light, the project nurtures emotional healing, self-expression, and belonging through art, storytelling, and human connection.

Through Roots Together workshops, pen-pal exchanges, and cultural collaborations, children learn to rebuild trust in themselves and in the world. Foster teens and orphans share a common resilience born from hardship, and by creating art, letters, and stories together, they discover that hope and kindness can bridge any distance. Each handmade card, poem, or painting becomes a message of empathy and shared strength.

The Sunflower Project also fosters intergenerational connection, inviting older adults and youth volunteers to join in acts of creation and mentorship. By sharing music, stories, and culture, participants celebrate diversity and compassion — forming a living circle of care where every voice is valued and every story matters. With every letter written and every heart that chooses hope, the world becomes a little brighter.
